Dr. Robert Bentley, Republican candidate for Governor, today announced plans for the establishment of a new office aimed at better communication between the Governor's office and local governments. If elected, Bentley said he would create The Office of Local Governmental Affairs which would serve as a liaison between municipalities and the state government. "This is one of the ways, as Governor, I plan to make government more efficient," said Bentley.  "The goal of this office is to open up the lines of communication between the Governor's office and our county and city governments."

Bentley said the new office would allow municipalities to have direct access to the Executive office. The liaison would be charged with addressing issues such as unfunded mandates for counties and cities. "Many times, locals are ordered to follow mandates handed down from the state government with no way to pay for them. The burden of funding then lies with the local government," Bentley said.

"The counties and cities should have input when these policies are put in place. They should have a say in policy development as it affects their areas. If elected, I plan to accomplish that with The Office of Local Governmental Affairs."

(August 23, 2010) - Dr. Robert Bentley, Republican candidate for Governor today released the first of a series of television ads detailing his plan for creating jobs and lowering Alabama's unemployment rate. The first of a series of television commercials begin airing Monday across the state. "Even with last week's new unemployment figure of 9.7 percent, we still have a lot of people without a job in Alabama, about 206,000 to be exact". Bentley said. "I'm sharing my plan to put Alabamians back to work."

In the commercial, "It's About Time" Bentley outlines his detailed jobs plan, which includes cutting red tape for small businesses, enforcing illegal immigration laws and keeping Alabama a right-to-work state. The commercials also emphasize the Alabama Reemployment Act of 2010 which Bentley authored. That act allows businesses to take up to a 50 percent tax deduction off the salary of anyone hired off the unemployment rolls.

Dr. Robert Bentley, Republican candidate for Governor, leads his opponent by 24 percentage points in a poll released today. The Rasmussen Reports' poll of likely voters in the state shows Bentley with 58 percent support to his opponents' 34 percent.

Bentley said he is encouraged by the poll, but is still focused on meeting Alabamians and sharing his plan to create jobs in the state. "The only poll that really matters is the one on November 2. I believe the voters are responding to our detailed plan to put Alabamians back to work, and our message that we will put a stop to the intrusion of the federal government in our lives, especially in the area of health care." Bentley said.

According to the Rasmussen poll 5 percent of the likely voters were still undecided.

DR. BENTLEY ENDS LEGISLATIVE SESSION WITH RECORD OF SUCCESS

MONTGOMERY - Last week, Governor Riley signed the Reemployment Act of 2010 into law. Dr. Bentley introduced the Reemployment act in January, and its enactment into law is only one of his many achievements during the 2010 Legislative Session. Other successes include:

  • Legislation to resolve the PACT funding crisis (HB 775) - passed the House on April 13, 2010;
  • Improving Veterans' Education Benefits (HB 607), passed the House on April 13, 2010;

About Dr. Bentley

Dr. Robert J. Bentley is running for Governor to grow the economy and create jobs without increasing taxes or spending. He is pro-life, pro-marriage, and pro-second amendment, and believes in smaller, more limited government with more transparency and accountability. He is best known as a successful small businessman who managed the growth of Alabama Dermatology Associates into the largest practice of its type in the Southeast.  His peers also selected him as one of the "Best Doctors in America."

In 2002, he won election to the Alabama House of Representatives from Tuscaloosa County with almost 65% of the vote.  In 2008, he won election as a Delegate for Gov. Mike Huckabee to the Republican National Convention (RNC), where he served on the RNC Platform Committee.

On December 7, 2009 he officially released his plan for "Putting Alabamians Back to Work."  He has pledged not to accept a salary as Governor until Alabama reaches full employment. He also is the author the Reemployment Act of 2010 which passed both the Alabama House and Senate with no opposition.

 ALEJANDRO PENA-ESCLUSA EXTOLS VIRTUES OF
FREE MARKETS & DEMOCRACY BEFORE THE STATE LEGISLATURE

MONTGOMERY- Yesterday, the Alabama House of Representatives passed House Joint Resolution 574, titled "COMMENDING ALEJANDRO PENA-ESCLUSA ON HIS COURAGEOUS STAND AGAINST TOTALITARIANISM."  Senor Pena-Esclusa received a copy of the resolution and a standing ovation on his way in and out of the Alabama House Chamber. Dr. Robert J. Bentley introduced the resolution to honor Senor Pena-Esclusa's work combating the spread of totalitarianism throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. Below is a condensed version of Dr. Bentley's remarks to the Alabama House.

He has demonstrated his commitment to opposing totalitarianism in the Western Hemisphere through his Venezuelan presidential candidacy against Hugo Chavez, as well as through the organizations he has helped found. He and his affiliated foundations, UnoAmerica and Fuerza Solidaria, are dedicated to using Free-Market and Pro-Democracy principles to advance economic development in Latin America that will improve the lives of the region's citizens.

Shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Cuban Dictator Fidel Castro joined with then-Marxist labor leader now-Brazilian President Luis Inacio Lula de Silva to found the Sao Paulo Forum which promotes a leftist-totalitarian agenda throughout the region. The Sao Paulo Forum succeeded in helping Hugo Chavez subvert his own nation's democratic processes to gain near total power and further a pro-Marxist, anti-freedom, anti-American agenda. For example, two years a Colombian military raid lead to the discovery that the Chavez regime in Venezuelan is helping the drug- trafficking FARC wage civil war against the legitimate government of Colombia, one of the few remaining strong democracies in the region.

Even more troubling, the growing economic ties between Iran and Venezuela have the potential to develop into a Marxist-Jihadist-Narcoterror alliance with the potential to use existing smuggling routes to help Islamic terrorists infiltrate the United States with weapons of mass destruction. Alabamians already struggle with the burdens that illegal immigration from Latin America place on our society. The last thing we should have to worry about is the possibility that Alabama could become ground zero for the next terrorist attack on American soil.

Senor Pena-Esclusa's organizations fight this leftist ideological onslaught by promoting free-market and democratic ideals throughout the region. We need to support him and his movement counter the leftist-Marxist march through Latin America.  Otherwise we could face an entire continent in our own backyard that opposes our commitment to individual freedom, and choices.

Senor Pena-Esclusa is worthy of Alabama's commendation for his efforts to roll-back the leftist tide that Marxist Dictator Hugo Chavez is trying to spread throughout the continent. I am pleased to offer this resolution of commendation for Alejandro Pena-Esclusa.
